In June 2017, Omar Alghabra hosted the Mississauga Centre Youth Council (MCYC) in Ottawa. The Council had several meetings to learn more about all the work the government is doing, and they had constructive feedback to share and tough questions to ask. They met with Peter Schiefke (Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister for Youth), Arif Virani (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage for Multiculturalism) and the Hon. Patricia Hadju, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.
Furthermore, they met with representatives from Global Affairs Canada, where they learned about Canada’s work on human rights, and provided their input to officials. They also met with Oxfam to learn more about the valuable work NGOs do to supplement the government’s efforts. They concluded their trip after seeing Question Period and a receiving a tour of Parliament.
Youth Councils are a great way to receive the valuable policy input that youth provide and to ensure that any decisions our government makes, are informed by their feedback.
